When William Koeller (Fred 1 CONC E.'s Dad) came from Germany in about 1878 or 1879, he purchased 80 acres 1 CONC of land, known as Rigsby Hollow. They settled down in the hollow by a 1 CONC big spring because there were no wells around here at that time. When 1 CONC Fred and Louise were married, they were also given the opportunity to buy 1 CONC 80 acres of land from the Williams. One farm to be sold to them was in 1 CONC Hurricane, about 5 or 6 miles from here, the other 80 acres was right 1 CONC next to grandpa (William). They choose to buy next to Grandpa William, 1 CONC to be closer to home and family. 1 CONT Dad's mother passed away when he was 14 years old and when his 1 CONC father died, of course he took over that 89 acres, this made him the 1 CONC owner of 160 acres. In the middle twenties they purchased another 40 1 CONC acres from the Schaefer family, which is still known as the Schaefer 40. 1 CONC They purchased a farm from the Keehner family in the thirties (the 1 CONC depression years). They built a silo on it, but then times got bad and 1 CONC they let it go back instead of losing everything but they did rent it for 1 CONC years and when money was available they bought it back again. The farm 1 CONC is still owned by 3 family members and we still call it the Keehner 1 CONC place. This gave Dad and Mom 410 acres to run. 1 CONT Because of the old Rigsby Hollow road closing in 1952, Dad had the 1 CONC opportunity to purchase another 20 acres of pasture, once owned by the 1 CONC Elskamp family and then by the McLaughlin family. That made a total of 1 CONC 430 acres. Today it is called the home place to the twelve children born 1 CONC from 1900-1924. There were 6 boys and 6 girls. Dorothy lives in 1 CONC Lancaster, Helen in Platteville, Warren and Fred W. live in Potosi. Fred 1 CONC and his wife Dorothy still are on the home farm. One girl (Leona) died 1 CONC as an infant. Three daughters (Hannah, Esther, and Bertha) and four sons 1 CONC (Arthur, Raymond, Leo, and Walter) are deceased. We all miss and love 1 CONC their memory and the contribution they gave to our lives. 1 CONT To this family they added 61 grandchildren and 100 plus 1 CONC great-grandchildren. Because of such large families and the number of 1 CONC sons born to those families the Koeller name will be carried on for a 1 CONC long time. 1 CONT Fred and Louise celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1949 1 CONC at home. The house was filled with many family members, relatives, 1 CONC neighbors, and friends. I remember so well that February 1st was so cold 1 CONC and we had a lot of snow. 1 CONT Dad lived to celebrate 64 years of marriage with Mom. He died at 1 CONC home on July 22, 1964. Mother lived here at home with Fred and Dorothy 1 CONC until she passed away on Christmas morning 1968. They both rest in peace 1 CONC in Van Buren Cemetery. 1 CONT The old farm where there were so many family get together is still 1 CONC much the same. Now many years later July 30, 1994, we are gathering 1 CONC again for a big family reunion with a lot of laughter, a few tears, and 1 CONC sharing many memories. 1 CONT They were very special people Mom and Dad. 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 CONT Tribute to Frederick Ernest Koeller. 1 CONT A lot of people knew our Dad by the name of Fritz, back in those 1 CONC days everyone had a nickname. 1 CONT He worked very hard when he was a young boy, one of his jobs, I 1 CONC recall, was cutting logs and hauling them to the mill. With the lumber 1 CONC he built most of the buildings on the farm. 1 CONT One part of the house was built in the early 1900's. Then in about 1 CONC 1925 or 1926 he and his brother "Uncle Will" built the part which is the 1 CONC kitchen today. Imagine inside toilets and electric lights put in a house 1 CONC back in those days, what a luxury. Dad was a guy that like to help 1 CONC others. He owned a thrashing machine, silo filler, shredder, clover 1 CONC hauler, the whole bit, and of course, with the large family at home to 1 CONC help, he would be gone for weeks at a time to help neighbors. 1 CONT When he was young, he and Mom's brother Julius Fritz would walk to 1 CONC town to play pool in the evening. When they would come in, the guys 1 CONC would holler, "here comes Julius and Fritz". Dad was a fellow when it 1 CONC came to doing something he was always in the middle of it, they did a lot 1 CONC of butchering back in those days. He would get up early and build the 1 CONC fires, heated the water to scald 10 to 12 hogs, and butchered one or two 1 CONC beef at a time. Butchering was always a family get together and before 1 CONC everyone went home they would have a big lunch of homemade bread and 1 CONC sausage. 1 CONT He also loved the Sunday and Holiday get together. Fourth of July 1 CONC was a big day for Dad. He would get some beer and pop and put it in a 1 CONC tank to cool for his family and the grandchildren. He always made a 1 CONC barrel or two of wine made from grapes he had grown himself. Lots of 1 CONC grandchildren can tell you a story of how they would love to go down in 1 CONC the cellar with him (sometimes without him) to get some wine out of the 1 CONC barrel with that little hose. Ha Ha!! 1 CONT He was also involved in the community, a school board member for 1 CONC years and attended church regularly. 1 CONT Saturday night was a special night for all of us. Getting the 1 CONC chores done early, then throwing the egg cases in the trunk of the car 1 CONC and headed for Walsh's store. There we got groceries, and went back to 1 CONC Potosi to see a free movie in the parking lot. There we would visit with 1 CONC neighbors and friends. Of course Dad always had his few glasses of good 1 CONC old Potosi beer and maybe sometimes a little stronger stuff. Dad would 1 CONC give us kids a couple of nickels or a dime for a treat and would say 1 CONC "don't come back for seconds". 1 CONT Dad had several strokes in his life time, but he always seemed to 1 CONC keep coming back until the last 10 years or so which he spent most of his 1 CONC time in a wheelchair. He never complained too much and was in his glory 1 CONC when family came home to visit. He loved to watch the family play cards 1 CONC and would love to joke with his grandchildren. 1 CONT I can see Dad sitting with his back to the hot water tank that stood 1 CONC in the kitchen with his pipe, cigar, or even a chew of tobacco in his 1 CONC mouth. That was his favorite spot in the winter time. Roesch, 86, of Lancaster, died Sunday evening, May 11, 1997 1 CONC at the Lancaster Care Center. 1 CONT He was born May 1, 1911 in the Township of Potosi, the son of Lake 1 CONC and Edna (Thomas) Roesch. On July 18, 1934, Keith married Dorothy 1 CONC Lillian Koeller at the Lancaster Methodist Church. 1 CONT Together they farmed in the Potosi-Lancaster area all of their 1 CONC lives. Keith was a well-known farmer and had an outstanding purebred 1 CONC Holstein herd--one of the first ones in the state. He was the first 1 CONC president of the Lancaster Chapter of the Future Farmers of America. At 1 CONC the age of 35, he was stricken with polio and spent some time in an iron 1 CONC lung; however, he continued to farm in spite of any disabilities. He was 1 CONC known for his determination and ability to overcome all obstacles. 1 CONT An avid sportsman, he loved to hunt and trap and was a lifetime 1 CONC member of the national Trappers Association. Keith dearly loved his 1 CONC grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 1 CONT Surviving are two children, Gerald (Janis) Roesch of Potosi and 1 CONC Beverlie (Robert) Austin of Middleton; seven grandchildren; 10 1 CONC great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anita (Victor) Schaefer of Potosi. 1 CONT In addition to his wife, Dorothy, who died on April 10, 1995, he was 1 CONC preceded in death by a sister, Gwendolyn Kaltenbach. 1 CONT The funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 14 at the 1 CONC Metcalfe-Kuenster-Page Funeral Home in Lancaster. She enjoyed 1 CONC crocheting, knitting, shopping and fishing.
